October 31st marks Halloween????, a traditional Western holiday full of fun and mystery. On this day, people dress up in a variety of unique and interesting costumes, transforming themselves into different characters. Children go door-to-door carrying bags, shouting “trick-or-treat,” filling the night with laughter and joy. One of the most significant and iconic traditions of Halloween is carving pumpkins to make jack-o’-lanterns.

To enrich students’ extracurricular experiences and help them better understand and integrate into Western culture, Ms. Katelyn Evering from Dewey Institute organized a pumpkin-carving event on Halloween. While the students were familiar with Halloween and dressing up, many knew little about the tradition of pumpkin carving. Ms. Evering patiently explained the origin of jack-o’-lanterns and demonstrated the steps for creating them. The students were eager to try, collaborating enthusiastically as laughter and creativity filled the room. By the end, everyone had successfully created unique pumpkin lanterns, each shining with individual creativity.

As night fell and the wind and rain picked up outside, the students, filled with excitement, set out into the community for trick-or-treating????. Although they returned with bags full of candy, the outing held a deeper significance. Through this activity, students not only experienced the joy of a traditional Western holiday but also had the chance to interact and engage with local residents, feeling the warmth and festivity of the community.

This Halloween, the students of Dewey Institute not only had a great time but also gained invaluable memories and experiences through the blending of cultures.
